Jake Arnold on Creating Balance and Layers in This L.A. Living Room
As told to The Expert TeamPhotographed by Michael Clifford
The Project
The house is a 1920s mock Tudor. We were brought on to renovate the home and refinish all the spaces from the original beam work, to the floors and created an updated version of the house while retaining its charming original features such as the fireplaces made of grit stone which is common in these types of homes in Los Angeles.
The Room
My favorite space in the house is the main living room which is open to the front and the back of the proposer with a lovely solarium attached. This room was designed primarily for entertaining and family gatherings so it was important to accommodate multiple seating groups. One of my philosophies for a well-designed living room is to have a varied layout that allows for intimate conversations to happen while also bringing bigger groups together.

The Inspiration
We wanted to pay homage to the richness of the architecture and old world LA feel while introducing more contemporary and vintage pieces to make the space feel fresh, up to date and reflect the clients refined personal style.
The Vibe
The vibe is layered and balanced. There is a warm inviting mood to the space that plays with scale, finishes and texture. We fabricated the custom sofa out of a rich green Rose Uniacke velvet that really anchors the space with the antique rug. It’s a grounding combination that allows the other pieces to stand alone and not compete.
