Like a glass of Bordeaux or a plum picked during peak season, our Experts’ favorite hue for fall is a lush and opulent classic.
As Veranda magazine reminds us, it’s also a nostalgic callback to every dining room in the ’90s. However, its modern-day applications feel anything but dated. Burgundy is the perfect color for layering a space with depth, comfort, and luxury. Jaimie Baird points out: “It's ideal for adding drama and warmth.” Martha Mulholland agrees, adding that aubergine shades inject a room with “rich, autumnal comfort.” It’s no wonder Behr picked it as their Color of the Year for 2025.
From deep mahogany to moody oxblood, our Experts share 4 wine-colored paint colors they love. Plus, discover the cozy neutrals and statement-making shades they’re excited about right now.

The Best Burgundy Paint Colors
“I love Townsend Harbour Brown by Benjamin Moore because it’s deep and rich but also warm. In kitchens, it doesn't feel dark because of the tile backsplash bouncing all of the light around.” —Lisa Staton
“Farrow and Ball’s Deep Reddish Brown is a rich, warm neutral. In a dead flat finish, it has a velvet-like feel—perfect for a cozy study. I also love applying it in a high-gloss on paneled walls in a small dark space like a powder room for a little jewel box moment.” —Katie Logan Leblanc and Jensen Killen, Logan Killen
"Chianti by Ressource is a deep, saturated burgundy with undertones of plum and a hint of dark cherry. It envelops you in a rich atmosphere, perfect for making an impact in smaller spaces, like powder rooms.” —Jaimie Baird
“I’ve been studying the opulent, immersive worlds of Mark Hampton and Renzo Mongiardino for recent projects. Both use dark paint in such a brilliant way. Farrow and Ball’s Brinjal is perfect for a library or powder bath (especially in a lacquer finish) and reminds me of those great decorators.” —Martha Mulholland

The Best Neutral Paint Colors
“A light gray acts as a neutral, much like a pair of broken-in jeans. Graytint by Benjamin Moore feels soft and approachable with just enough depth to provide contrast, yet subtle enough to blend seamlessly into the background. I use this color in powder rooms and bedrooms where warm natural light is abundant.” —Jaimie Baird
“As we move into fall and winter, I am inspired by richer colors and combinations. Try Domingue Architectural Finishes in the earthy color Parterre with accents of Ardoise. I love this for a dining room or moody powder room. Whether in Belgian Flat or Belgian Natural, both finishes are very durable and will look rich and timeless.” —Olivia Williams
“I love Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore. It’s a greige that looks beautiful with a creamy zellige tile and white walls.” —Lauren Lowe
“For a light and bright approach, try Domingue Architectural Finishes color Chemise. This warm white is as beautiful as a lime wash for interiors or exteriors. I prefer to apply it in vertical strokes and use it everywhere!” —Olivia Williams

The Best Green Paint Colors
“Pigeon by Farrow & Ball is soft enough that it doesn't take away from other spaces but it adds interest and a little jolt into darker areas.” —Alex Adamson
“Pigeon by Farrow & Ball is perfect for larger spaces where you want to bring in a blue-gray-green without going too dark. It layers beautifully with warm neutrals and transforms throughout the day.” —Katie Logan Leblanc and Jensen Killen, Logan Killen
“I am obsessed with the color Cedre by Ressource. It's a saturated jewel tone with a velvet-y quality and a slight blue undertone, giving it a cool depth. When paired with warm earth tones, it creates a vibrant contrast while maintaining a harmonious vibe. I used this in a media room accented with a disco ball!” —Jaimie Baird
“To me, the deep, muddy green of Portola’s Nostalgia is the color companion to the Santa Maria Novella fragrance of the same name. It evokes the spirit of mahogany-paneled cocktail bars and worn leather club chairs, the romance of Thoroughbred horses racing down the backstretch, and vintage Italian sports cars that smell of oud, oil, and cigars. The Roman Clay application softens the edges of the color to create a hazy, painterly quality perfect for a den, media room, or lounge.” —Martha Mulholland
“I love French Gray by Farrow & Ball. It’s subtle enough that you won’t get sick of it. It has that sea-glass look so it’s very comforting and brings the outside in. Perfect for adding a touch of warmth and interest to a kitchen.” —Katie Davis
